I came across this fan-art of Dottie recently and it made me think back to how interesting a "serious" take on the show would be. I've thought the same about other light-hearted shows like Inspector Gadget, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and some others which don't come to mind. Things which are mostly comedy or mostly feel-good and due to their all-ages ratings don't deal with stuff like war or profound depression, there's something about the idea of a "many years later" intensifying on it. I've seen it done with artwork of Super Mario Brothers, a fan remake of Power Rangers, various TMNT shows srs up over time, etc.

Think of all the grizzled doctors (like Gregory House) who become cynics, or who are stretched to the limit and begin to lose their shine. If Dottie is the sole human with a magic amulet to animate toys and be able to diagnose and repair them, if she keeps expanding her services to helping kids all over the realm, she would be busier than Santa, and I've seen some interpretations of Santa which are quite corporate or cynical!
